| Lutheran churches have a
long history of supporting Christian education. The first priority
has been to bring children up in a good relationship with the one, true, holy, gracious and compassionate God revealed in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Lutheran schools strive to develop a foundation for children built upon God in Christ and His Word.
They also excel at teaching english, math, science, physical education and all sorts of extra-curricular activities in order to help prepare children
to thrive in and contribute to today's world—all to the praise and honor of God.
True to the historic principle of Lutheran churches who value educating children and providing a Christian environment for learning, First Lutheran Church opened their school in 1870, less than one year after the
congregation was formed. Today First Lutheran is one of over 2,000 Lutheran elementary schools in the United
States and Canada. Combined with these other Lutheran schools and 12,000+ teachers, they are educating well over 200,000 children. Our national organization of churches (The Lutheran—Church Missouri Synod) also maintains one of the largest systems of
universities and seminaries in the United States and abroad.
